about

This is a compilation of songs I've released in various ways over the past four years mastered at last to actually be audible. Some of them were efforts to do bigger productions with multiple instruments and vocal parts, and some are just acoustic demos that fall into line with things I've released in the past. Everything was recorded by me in my bedroom except for the violins on Mars Hockerby, which were recorded and sent to me by my friend, Jimmy Ikeda (of the musical project, The Michael Character, through which Jimmy releases some of the most interesting and thoughtful music I've ever heard. Do yourself a favor and look them up.) All of the music was mixed by me (an inexperienced goofus trying to cure his post-highschool ennui by dumping layers of reverb and glockenspiel on everything like ranch on pizza.) All of the songs were mastered by Wes Meadows of Flowerpot Records (whose idea it was for me to do a retrospective in the first place. Without Wes' friendship and encouragement, I wouldn't have returned to these songs.)
Thank you for listening.

credits

released July 12, 2016

All songs were written and recorded by me, Taylor Parissi.
The violin parts on track 8 were performed and recorded by Jimmy Ikeda
On track 10 there is the slightest hint of a sample from Rory Scovel's album, Dilation, taken from a bit about Step Up 3D. Rory Scovel is very very good at jokes. (It's at the very end, and is partially faded out. This was done during remastering to avoid copyright infringement on Spotify.)

Track Name: Goldie
Goldie died in the grip of a hospital high
by the merciful drip of a bag at her bedside
but we survived her
liquidated all her assets
before the bank could even file the paperwork
Tony fell down a flight of marble steps
to the basement where we used to crush tin cans
free labor for some change from the recycling plant
and his hair stayed dark
and he didn't have to die it
and his eyes stayed open
but his past was awful violent
Snuck whiskey in the garage
but he never stunk of it
and he made a vengeful litter
but he was nearly superhuman
Twice removed you can't see
the shine was made by spit
and once in a blue moon
your darling might get violent
twice removed you can't see
shit on a bed sheet
but you can wince and wink
like a caring spirit
Track Name: Yer Scheme (Swamp Dream)
Welcome, welcome,
way beyond the coastal shelf something comes alive
legend, legend
had it happened
long ago and eager evil thrived

Great big wave, come and take my town
Great big wave, oh almighty drowned
Cloud of color, mouth of mountain teeth
well of parasitic energy

Come and take me, I am waiting
I'll do your bidding, I'll be a piece
Come and take me, cut me and shape me
into your scheme

Aquamarine granite
rising obelisks from bioluminescent crests
bubble up an ancient croak
and chattel chains that lacerate our necks

Jagged jaw rotting underneath
Ancient tongue, oppressor I beseech
I'm not pure, but maybe worth your time
I'll do evil, I'll recite your lines

Come and take me, I am waiting
I'll do your bidding, I'll be a piece
Come and take me, cut me and shape me
into your scheme
Track Name: No Sleep
Ghosts underneath the frame of a king-sized bed
tell tales of old flames, gradeschool mistakes,
and actively inactive friends
Born of a smalltown, I'll die in a small town
nameless
that I can not disown
for someone else, I am “one of them”

You are no protagonist despite your hubris
despite your parents pumping you with compliments
you are no genius despite your music
despite the sycophants affirming your existence

Would you rather in the bedroom, in the kitchen
practice your religion
All your good friends, your baby nieces
if no one feeds them funny faces will they fall to pieces

Wolves at the door of my childhood home
barge the protector and rip him bone from bone
I am barely a thought in his mind
so he still thrashes and clashes to fight the dying of the light

Some would say through grand displays of mercy
a god hand's moulding dream
but who's to say a handgun in a bathtub
isn't divine intervention through mortal means

You are no figurehead, you are no idol
you will never usher in an indie rock revival
if you're an inspiration you'll go down in flames
skinny jeans and cardigans stomp your
Texas! Texas! grave
Track Name: Hot Cognitions
In providers, not the parents, there’s mostly something missing
Friends begat an ugly type of creature
When the nest egg catches fire put the masses in the pyres
I hope your offspring is the main feature
Rip apart a gold mine
ribbons ripping into twine
Melting, molding minor minds
no longer worth entire lives

Oh, the modern songs go
I love you so! I need you so!
Take off your clothes
Forget your friends! buy our colognes!
Our hot cognitions sold as freedom
Don’t be defeated by tradition

Before undignified decline I think I’d rather I resign
And devote my life to spreading something cleaner
When there’s acid in the air, a fight with nature
Fine and fair
Could leave the furrowed face of cityscapes beleaguered
What about a white lie
Loosens up a tight tie
The hypnotizing soft sighs
But no longer worth entire lives

Oh, the modern songs go
I love you so! I need you so!
Take off your clothes
Forget your friends! buy our colognes!
Our hot cognitions sold as freedom
Don’t be defeated by tradition

We refuse to accept the clear and present danger of your tongue
And how you lash it at me as if I were truly no one
Track Name: Dull Action
The visions won't come back
until we will them to
passively diluted
when the origins pass
it's an active truth
nothing stays sweet
pull hard on your baby teeth
and cry when the root bleeds

Born again, an island at 22
baptized in the sweat of
three clandestine moves
Burn the bad out
wrap your gut in a lover's mouth
doll-eyes do no good now

The right track is dull action
it forges a forward fashion
stored for the winter's passing
but it takes so god damned long
quicker pay comes from dropping the ball
giving in got me nowhere at all
but I'll sleep 'til the sadness gets small

There's no avoiding cracks
until they're all filled in
skinned knees on split concrete
the red pixels calming
it's the broken scheme of a snowy TV
Three brand new ids
in succession embarrassing
for a round of well-whiskey
in succession embarrassing

(When I play this live, I end it with a second lyrical chorus that is:
For a while I was a watching it all
pass me by, working ways just to stall
infinitesimal and decimal small
Coming weekly at punctual two
so someone better can show me the truth
no invader is gnawing the root
It is false, it is topsoil, it stays loose)
Track Name: Champagne Supernova Part 2
I go to the watering hole where my friends get lethargic,
or over-emotive, or turned into shells of their former selves
Weekends into trash compactors
Routine wretch like miserable actors
Smashed in the booth or up at the bar
Supernovas of degenerate stars

A lot of decisions are left up to fear
of boring behavior, so silent we stay
all the while the backs of our brains erupt in signals of smoke
You and me, we are choking
on banter and barstools
picked off by the vultures
a perpetual culture of shit we could stir in our sleep
so we walk like zombies
intake our whiskey
It's awful routine, but I suppose it's a living

The swill isn't easy but it makes you feel pretty
and you're well-deserving when you've conquered the work week
a cauldron, a shitty existence
we inch close to our faux friends
and call it a blessing

I go to the watering hole where my friends get lethargic,
or over-emotive, or turned into shells of their former selves
Weekends into trash compactors
Routine wretch like miserable actors
Smashed in the booth or up at the bar
Supernovas of degenerate stars
Track Name: Perfectly White Teeth
In the car by the store I can never show my face in again
skinny digit tore troughs through denim
so you could drink up all the blood and the sweat

It could have been something I said

It's not the devil in the motives
it's the poison-bellied babies
petting me like a faithful dog
If not satan in tight skin
a cause for celebration
temptation-incarnate, my god!
A chemical-addicted valid argument for distance
with claws cutting into my arm

It could have been something I said
It should have been something I said

In the car, once again, breaking the land-speed record
sucking necks, licking lips, initialing that pale pale skin
crossing eyes and drooling tongues
I am not the one you really want

In your hands I am golden and frozen solid

It's not the devil in the motives
it's the poison-bellied babies
petting me like a faithful dog
If not satan in tight skin
a cause for celebration
temptation-incarnate, my god!
A chemical-addicted valid argument for distance
with claws cutting into my arm

It could have been something I said
It should have been something I said
Track Name: Mars Hockerby (feat. James Ikeda)
Some spoke of a thing juggling fire, swallowing swords
sick and thin as a wire, kissing cold sores
lush heads yet yield no fruit, so do as we do
an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth
fallen from grace and subjective mistakes
the morningstar waits disguised as a snake

Know a fight when you see one
without sentience what good is flesh and blood?

The snow that crunches beneath your feet
and the sparkle in your baby teeth
it will all be ancient history
Track Name: My Time in Cryo-Prison
Is it just me or is my hair getting thin
are my hands weighted under pounds of poignant sin?
Is it just me or am I out past a valley full
of high school stories and halloween masks?
Cradled like a baby on a bed of nails
every morning, every evening, every night
squeal with a burst of delight

Something putrid in the future
for every beast we ever know
and in turn the beast of burden
keeps your different sections in tune
This is not me, this is not you
Our casing crawls, or organs stew
This is not me, this is not you

Wear your lack of interest as a curse
transport your inhibition in a hearse
any cast that counts could swear
they've seen you come back from worse
Cradled like a baby on a bed of bibles
every second, every minute does some harm
Cowardice incarnate after eons of adjusting
stick those thumbs into my pudgy arms

Something putrid in the future
for every beast we ever know
and in turn the beast of burden
keeps your different sections in tune
This is not me, this is not you
Our casing crawls, or organs stew
This is not me, this is not you

This winter's gonna be a killer
This winter's gonna be a killer, I can taste it

You can jump into the sea
It won't save you
You can climb into a cloud
you won't be delivered
That dread will only stand to linger
This winter's gonna be a killer
Track Name: I am the Storm Prince
We used to go out at night
now our closest friends can't stand the sight
Always waiting
Eyes peer out of sockets
We've built our own coffins

Who are these new faces,
bright and shiny big hands
and wide eyes

Beautiful thing of notable name
you used to be something, something familiar
so why am I trying so hard to destroy you
Track Name: Be a Baby! Be a Baby! Be a Baby!
I've looked into the face of God
but eye sockets were all I saw
lightbulb holes and lightning sparks
an old machine with missing parts
I'd direct you where I've been
but the beasts are thick and the air is thin
I've looked into the face of God
Headlights on low-income lawns

I want to be a baby
in a warm little blanket
on the step of my father's house
on the coldest day of the year
stay here
I'll stay here
soft and vacuum-sealed
